Book review- Zoravar:Book One in the Bollywood Saga

This is a book written by first time author Maharsh Shah and its based on the life of fictional bollywood hero Zoravar. This is part 1 of the Bollywood Saga. It follows Zoravar’s adventures right from his adolescence to his middle age. His journey from utter poverty to a rich affluent life.

I thoroughly enjoyed this book, could not keep this book down for a minute after I started reading. The beauty of it is that although its about a fictional character, the timeline and events mentioned in the book are all real events that have taken place right from Partition era to the Indira Gandhi era. Also the fine subtle details and personality traits of all the Hindi film industry stars are so interesting and intriguing. I totally appreciate the effort put in by the author to research on each real artist mentioned in this book, be it directors, producers, writers or actors.

Bombay, the city of dreams, is the heart and soul of this story. The different studios referenced too in this book are such a crucial part of the storyline.

Coming to the writing, its incredibly simple yet keeps you totally engrossed to the storyline. I did find some miniscule editorial mistakes but thats trivial. I especially love some of the references made to objects and events of those years…be it the different cigarette brands or the Osho community reference. I almost believed till the end that this has to be based on a real person’s life as it was that convincing. The story also addresses the ill effects of the ‘Page3’ life of celebrities like alcoholism, drugs, infidelity, casting couch and competitive rivalry.

I am super excited for the second part and cant wait to see what happens next in the story. Maybe this can be a web series, what say Netflix?!

This is a must read especially for those who love the glitz and glamour of the world of cinema.

A R Rahman- My top 15 gems

You know how difficult it is for me to do this?! To zero down to my favourite 15 among all of ARR music across all languages?! I mean you can’t possibly understand how difficult it is for me…..coz I am an ARR bhakt (across all languages). His songs are like meditation to me,his music has the power to completely uplift my mood no matter what kind of a day I am having. His songs teleport me to various places. His music is magic to me!

But still….I have made that tedious choices and here I present (drumroll………..)

………..

………..

……..

My top 15 fav ARR songs! (In no specific order) Mind you, there may be some gems in here which you may not even have heard.

1.Hello Mr.Ethirkatchi-
Gosh this one does not age, this song was released 24 years ago,but is still as good as new! Iruvar has to be one of my most favourite tamil movies and it also was Aishwarya Rai’s debut movie. This song is picturized on her and she is so damn flawless in it,I think she was fabulous in the whole movie. This song has a very Jazz feel to it ,something so different to the tamil industry specially in those days.

Here’s the link to this timeless beauty- https://youtu.be/JqgwTxDeOa8

2.Agar Tum Saath Ho-
Aah now who does not love this song?! It is a classic and Alka Yagnik and Arijit do more than justice to it. The beauty of this song is the pain and misery associated to it,its depicted so beautifully, the lyrics by Irshad Kamil just touches your soul deep within.

Pfb link just so that you can revisit this gem- https://youtu.be/xRb8hxwN5zc

3. Aye Mr.Minor-
This one is another beautiful song, with a very Jazz feel to it. The supremely talented Shasha Tirupati takes the song to a different level.

Pfb link- https://youtu.be/gUcSm8A-bgE

4.Mannipaaya-
This list would be incomplete without a VTV song.Actually I wish to add all songs of VTV to this list, but then it wouldn’t be fair to the rest. Shreya Ghoshal is amazing, and the choir used in this song is just mind-blowing, I dont know how ARR does it,but its magic. Also Jessie-Karthik chemistry is vere level.

5.Maahi Ve-
Aren’t all songs of Highway amazing,i mean how does one choose 😭, but still from among the lot this one is my favourite, it has a very light hilly (pahadi) feel good vibe to it.

Pfb link- https://youtu.be/xHLnZMjJ8bY

6.Kalvare-

Another one of my favourite slow numbers, it is so soothing and Aishwarya’s graceful dancing is eye candy (thanks to the legendary Shobhana ma’am who was the choreographer)

Pfb link- https://youtu.be/rpc43hOKy0A

7.Ay Hairathe-
Hariharan and Alka Yagnik duet, the unusual stanza and the familiar chorus of ‘Tere bina’ song in the background just adds to the magic.

Pfb link- https://youtu.be/038jmlSH3iM

8.Thalli pogathey-
The catchy beats, stunning visuals and amazing lyrics are the highlights of this song. The wait to reach the chorus is tiresome but so so rewarding.

9.Malargaley-

This is from a 1996 tamil movie Lovebirds and its a beautiful song. This K S Chithra and Hariharan duet is so romantic ❤️

10.Kannodu kaanbadhellam-
This classical song has been my favourite for dance especially during school and college days. Although classical ,its definitely very catchy and trendy.

15.Naan Yen-
I heard this in the Coke studio and since then it is my favourite. The wordings are actually from a poem by poet Vaali, his words truly come to life in this composition.

Honorary mention (this is because I am from Kerala and this is the only malayalam song in this post)

I have also put up the youtube links for the songs so incase u havent heard them…u surely can now…rite away!

1.So my list is not exactly in the chronological order but i will try.So first up is ‘Ae Ajnabi’ from DilSe.The lyrics in this song is so beautiful especially if you are reaching out to a loved one with whom u hav no touch now or to sumone really far away from u both physically or emotionally! ARR just goes to prove that he is ace!

https://youtu.be/RNjBz0kdaJk

2.Second up is ‘Tadap Tadap’ from Hum Dil De Chuke Sanam. The movie itself was a musical saga of the legendary Ismail Darbar…this song is about painful separation between 2 lovers. The stanzas are so good n meaningful that it will surely make one cry.

https://youtu.be/NV_XDwH606c

3.’Tanhayee’ from Dil Chahtha Hain…the movie was a cult movie. But this sad number is a killer…its all about loneliness as the song title aptly means.

https://youtu.be/ZkwaiIGoyT4

4.’Nahin Samne’ from Taal. Another brilliant musical saga by ARR.Hariharan nailed it vit his soothing vocals.

https://youtu.be/-8tojQ18w08

5.’Mathura Nagarpati’ – Raincoat. Not many ppl like this song but its one of my fav. Shuba Mudgal almost narrates a story in this iconic song. This is the kind of song tat gives me a chill down my spine.

https://youtu.be/VC0RcZ5kwkE

6.’Ya Rabba’ – Salaame-E-Ishq. Kailash Kher wrks his magic in this song…and the lyrics especially touches ur heart in a very special way if ur heart has ever been broken.

https://youtu.be/pMFl6R5OqT4

7.’Aaoge Jab Tum’ from Jab We Met.This song is almost similar to the one above.

https://youtu.be/WPwTPhFMm3k

8.’Tune Jo Na Kaha’- New York. Again this song doesnt come up in everyone’s playlist but it does in mine esp for the lyrics. Its about love which goes unexpressed. Also with this song the Mohit Chauhan era sets in.Plus this song serves as an excellent lullaby if u r sleepless.

https://youtu.be/uVTdmJIcjtQ

9.’Jag Soona Soona Lage’ – Om Shanti Om. Excellent beats for a sad song.Oh and with this song enters the Rahat Fateh Ali Khan era.😊

https://youtu.be/5VP-tau_XfU

10.’Lehrein’ – Aisha. This song was the only thing good about the movie and it is my official favourite sad song. Its about broken plans and broken dreams. With this music Amit Trivedi proved that he is no less to ARR.

https://youtu.be/WYDc1JQqduY

11.’Kun Faya Kun’ – Rockstar. Yup God is God and ARR proved that with this movie. This Sufi number is magical and it will truly help anyone and everyone who has any trouble in his life. Its talks about eternal trust and devotion to the almighty.

https://youtu.be/T94PHkuydcw

12.So my list is nearly ending here.’Tu Kuja’ from Highway.By now you know ARR is my favourite. But the credit for this song i think would go to Sunidhi Chauhan for her vocals.Great variation in the music and Sunidhi catches some insane high tones. This song is also about devotion to God…a song about being desperate and seeking immediate divine intervention.

https://youtu.be/_7oqN2WeRNM

13.List would be totally incomplete without PritamDa. ‘Kabira’ – Yeh Jawani Hain Diwani.Well this song wudnt entirely come in the sad category…but it does call out to someone who is leaving n hence is sad!

https://youtu.be/jHNNMj5bNQw

14.’Agar Tum Saath Ho’ – Tamasha. So among the recent ones this would be my ultimate fav.Alka Yagnik and Arijit would hav seemed like an odd pair but this song has proved that they are amazing n legendary. The end esp is killer with both the male n female voice intertwining. ARR- you rock Sir!

https://youtu.be/6SGRn9OHtFY

15.’Channa Mereya’ – Ae Dil Hain Mushkil.Never really thought this movie would make this list coz i hated the movie but this song….this song just maybe saves the film! The lyrics honestly cant get any better! Absolutely love it…Mere zikr ka zubaan pe swaad rakhna…!

https://youtu.be/z-diRlyLGzo

So tats my ‘heartbreak’ 💔 playlist…So drive away the blues with these awesome numbers.Tata!
